PART 1: How to Register a New Car in Kenya

Just bought a brand-new car from a dealership or imported one yourself? Here's how to register it officially with NTSA.

    

    Step-by-Step Registration Process

1. Create an eCitizen & NTSA TIMS Account

   • Visit www.ecitizen.go.ke

   • Sign up using your ID, phone, and KRA PIN.

2. Log into NTSA TIMS Portal

   • Use https://tims.ntsa.go.ke

   • Choose “Vehicle Registration”

3. Fill Vehicle Details

   • Chassis/VIN Number

   • Engine Number

   • Make, model, color, year

   • Seller/importer details

4. Upload Required Documents

   • Import Declaration Form (IDF)

   • KEBS & customs inspection

   • Invoice from seller

   • Insurance certificate

5. Pay Registration Fees

   • Charges vary depending on engine size

   • Includes an e-sticker fee (KES 750)

6. Receive Logbook & E-Sticker

   • NTSA processes in 3–5 working days

   • You’ll be notified via SMS/email

     PART 2: How to Transfer Ownership of a Used Car in Kenya

      

Bought a used car or selling yours? Follow this process to transfer ownership safely and legally.

     Requirements Before Transfer:

• Both buyer and seller must have NTSA TIMS accounts.

• Vehicle must have no issues (e.g., logbook loans, theft, unpaid duty).

     Seller’s Steps:

1. Log into NTSA TIMS account

2. Go to “Vehicle Registration → Apply for Transfer”

3. Enter buyer’s ID and phone number

4. Upload the current logbook

5. Pay the transfer & e-sticker fees

6. Submit transfer request

 Transfer Fees Based on Engine Capacity (plus e-sticker – KES 750):

• Up to 1000cc – KES 2,210

• 1201–1500cc – KES 2,615

• Over 3000cc – KES 6,465

 Buyer’s Steps:

1. Log into their NTSA TIMS account

2. Accept the transfer under “Vehicle Transfer → Accept Ownership”

3. Enter SMS code

4. Confirm and submit

     Logbook will be updated in 3–5 working days.
